The birds are nesting, the bees are out, and the longer, warmer days have so many of us itching to add a few spring flourishes to the house to make it feel fresh while the grass has yet to fully go green.
But what? And where? And how? Making the switch to spring decor on budget, in a small amount of time, without having to scour the stores - how are you going to do that? Well for the next few weeks I'm going to give you some tips, some photos, some easy places to shop with some great products, all convenient to you and affordable on your wallet. I'm going to share a few favourite Etsy shops for digital downloads you can buy and print anywhere (even in your own home!)
- a quart of paint for your front door from Benjamin Moore and a consult from me on which colour to choose
- a $25 Etsy gift card
- a $25 Sunnyside Garden centre gift card
Note: to win the paint or garden centre gift card you must be in Calgary or within decent driving distance from Calgary
Week One - Artwork & Framing
A word on frames. Frames are relatively easy to store, they're generally flat, and bought at the right place won't break the bank. This makes keeping a few extras around for the change in seasons is less space consuming than some other seasonal objects. Check out places like Walmart, Superstore, Home Sense, Winners, and stores that sell Umbra for affordable, stylish frames. Oh yes, and Ikea ;) Don't forget to include pattern and texture in your frames!
Below I did a watercolour painting and added it into this lovely minty frame. Look at all the fun texture it has! The spring gallery wall is up too - tulips & birds have been rotated into the changing frames. All these images or paintings were acquired through Etsy. For a fun touch to the frames I spray painted the spacer gold - but you could do any colour!
DIY Frame Ideas
Create your own artwork!
No really - you can do this! All you have is your kids' crayola watercolours - no problem! Get the thickest paper you have in your house (or buy some cheap watercolour paper for you and the kids). Cut your pieces into 4x6 and 5x7 pieces and start painting. Make shapes, make flowers, make anything! Just paint! Take a look at the colours you already have in some artwork, textiles, anything in your house currently - use those as your inspiration colours.
Better yet - get your kids to create something for you, use something they've already created, or work together on a piece.
Or maybe take a class like this one through 4 Cats.

- Where is Alex
- Gypsy Skulls (new items launching April 15! - can't wait to get my hands on a watermelon)
- Modern Printable Art
- Little Me Paper Shop - in particular this succulent print for those with black thumbs
- Paper Canoe Printables
I seriously have a bunch more. But why not go find something just for you. Start with a search and start narrowing it down using the filters - colour, location, you name it. I like to try searching, abstract digital printables, or water color digital printables. Maybe you're looking for a saying, quote, flowers, whatever. And if you're stuck, send me a note, I can probably get you going in the right direction.
So.... how are you going to update your home this spring with artwork or frames? Make sure you share!
